Carpeting

Nylon carpeting is the least expensive floor covering available and provides comfort and sound reduction. However, particularly as manufactured for residential use, nylon carpeting is highly energy intensive (75 times more energy is required than for kiln dried hardwood floors (www.boral.com.au). It is intolerable to many chemically sensitive individuals and some children because of off-gassing from glues and additives. It is frequently discarded into landfills after only a few years of service. It is arguably one of the least valuable uses of petroleum. Indeed, despite a massive industry recycling effort that hopes to divert 40% of carpet waste from landfills by 2012, more carpet will be thrown out in 2012 than today because of overall projected sales growth.
