Natural Cork flooring is resilient and durable.
Cork installations from the 1890's ( a church in Chicago) to the 1940's (Frank
Lloyd Wright home, Mayo Clinic) are still functional today. Whether it's a
kitchen or a work environment, cork makes any space more comfortable and quiet.
Cork bark can be removed every 9-14 years with no damage to the tree. Cork
flooring is actually a recycled by-product of cork bottle stopper manufacture
and there is no shortage of supply. This ground up by product is
densified three
times
with steam and pressure to make flooring tiles and plank wear
layers and then 3-5 coats of long lasting acrylic (planks) or plant based
curable oil (tiles) is applied. The resulting flooring surface is tough and
more easily repaired than vinyl or wood. It is also naturally water-repellent
(remember cork floats!)
The 1' x 3' clic together floating planks are great in kitchens, below grade or
over radiant heat. The clic makes them an easy product for do-it-yourselfers.
Look for both 1/2" thick premium Natural Cork planks or the slightly thinner
lower cost Eco Cork planks
With regular sweeping and an occasional application of hardwood floor cleaner
or Natural Cork-recommended care products, these floors will last several
decades. Poorly maintained floors can be restored with a screening (light
sanding or abrasion) and recoat of finish. They cannot and do not need to be
sanded.
